Trio Of Breeders’ Cup Winners Nets Rosario Jockey Of The Week Title

Following an outstanding performance during the Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Churchill Downs, Joel Rosario was named Jockeys’ Guild Foundation Detox Jockey of the Week for October 29 – November 4, 2018. The award is voted on by a panel of experts for riding accomplishments by members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 950 riders in North America. Even among all the notable performances from horses and jockeys during the Breeders’ Cup, Joel Rosario stood out with four stakes wins, more than any other North American jockey, and led by total and stakes earnings.

Three of Rosario’s wins came in Breeders’ Cup races, including the feature race, the $6,000,000 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) with Accelerate ($7.40), the multiple graded stakes winner whose 2018 campaign places him in the discussion for Champion Horse of the Year.

Rosario also won the featured race of the Friday Future Stars card, the $2,000,000 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) with Game Winner ($4.00). Earlier on the card he also won the $2,000,000 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) with Jaywalk ($13.00).

He completed the late double on the Friday card at Churchill Downs with a win in a former Breeders’ Cup race, the $200,000 Marathon Stakes (G2), with Rocketry ($6.60).

The stakes wins vaulted him to the top of the earnings leaderboard for the week, with $5,814,280 in stakes earnings and $5,859,850 in total earnings, more than any other North American jockey.

Rosario ended the week with five wins, one second-place finish, and three third-place finishes in 21 starts, giving him a win rate of 24% and an in-the-money rate of 43%. He has won 138 mounts in 2018 out of 808 starts, with $20.9 million earnings. His career totals including $186 million, with 2,585 wins in 14,263 starts.

Voters also expressed support for Irad Ortiz, Jr. Ortiz was recognized with the Bill Shoemaker award for his outstanding performance at the Breeders’ Cup. He won two Breeders’ Cup races, the $1,000,000 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) with Shamrock Rose ($53.80) and the $1,000,000 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1) with Newspaperofrecord ($3.20). Additionally, Ortiz placed second in three Breeders’ Cup races, including the $6,000,000 Breeders’ Cup Classic with Gunnevera.
